A Couple’s Path Through Care
Nancy Neil and Bernie Block met later in life, fell in love and married in 2014. Four years later, they made a move to Meadow Active Lifestyle Community. “I had friends here and was already familiar with the community and loved it. I told him he should take a tour. He did and loved it too.”
“When we moved here, it was important to know that there was a next step we could access if we needed it,” said Nancy. That reassurance became vital when Bernie’s health changed in 2021, prompting a move to the Sam Swope Care Center for medical support. They quickly discovered the benefits of living at a Life Care community when, a month later, Bernie’s needs changed again, and he easily transitioned to Crescent Grove Memory & Personal Care.
Because Crescent Grove was just a short walk away, Nancy could visit Bernie daily. “At first, I was there a lot but he quickly got settled in and started making new friends.” When Bernie passed in 2022, Nancy found solace living in a community they both loved so much, and that allowed them to be close even though their care needs were different.
In 2024, Nancy discovered the benefit of living in a Life Care Community first-hand following a stroke. She made a precautionary move to Grove Pointe while she was still very independent but could have the peace of mind that additional support was available when she needed it.
She added, “I thought it would take me longer to adjust because my apartment is smaller but I quickly realized it had all the space I needed.”
She even adopted a puppy named Gigi Louis who lives with her daughter but visits regularly for walks around campus.
“I feel good, and when you feel good, you get up and move around,” said Nancy. “Gigi and I enjoy walking to Meadow and visiting my friends.”
She also nurtures the friendships she and Bernie made when he was living at Crescent Grove. “I like to go to Thirsty Thursdays,” she said. “I take my own alcohol and I spend time talking with the residents and employees. I know I may transition there one day so I like to stay connected.”
Nancy has a very novel look on her life at a Life Care community. “The way it works here is really pretty neat,” said Nancy. “You know where your next stop is if you need additional care.”
